Yes, Train accident are a common feature in the Indian Railways. Study of train accident records suggests that a large number of accidents happen because of derailments and at railway crossings.  Till recent timeslot Of crossings were open and a majority of accidents occurred due to the Human and Railway authority negligence.
Four passengers standing on the footboard of a crowded suburban train died after they hit a wall and fell off at St Thomas Mount here on Tuesday, police said. Three others were injured in the incident during the morning rush hour.
According to preliminary reports, the commuters were travelling on the footboard in view of peak hour congestion.

As per the data by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), around 27,581 people died during the year 2014 in Railway related accidents. According to the analysis by NCRB, the leading causes of railway accidents were - fall from trains, collisions of trains and collision with people on tracks.

Train derailment due to fishplate removal by miscreants was also getting one of the serious causes of train accidents in India. The Indian Railway ministry is trying its best to get strong safety measures available internationally to make railway journey safe.
